How is the ranch managed now? |
HHH Ranch is a 10,500 acre ranch that has been hunted by the family or by lease hunters
under strict management program since 2000. In 2001 we began doing all the outfitting with
full time ranch personnel. We feel we can provide a better quality experience for our hunters
this way.
 |
How do we hunt the ranch? |
We hunt the ranch many different ways. A lot depends on what the deer are doing and
what the hunter feels comfortable with. We have permanent deer blinds near feeders, and
we have ground blinds and tripods to go after deer that are not coming to feeders.
We also have tree and ladder stands for bow hunters, and from time to time we build
brush blinds or use double bull blinds to get a chance at a particularly sly buck. We also
rattle and stalk. Basically whatever it takes to get the harvest as long as it is safe and
legal. We assign one guide to two hunters. We guide hunts to try and insure that the hunter
has the best experience that he can and to insure that we are managing our herd to produce
the finest whitetails.
 |
What kind of deer herd do you have? |
We feel we have a top quality deer herd here on the ranch. The majority of our bucks
taken with a bow will be P&Y class. We have an abundance of eight and ten point
140" to 150" bucks on the ranch. We also have 160" to 180" class animals, they are very
difficult to take. Our goal is to increase this number by lowering the hunting pressures
that force these large deer to go nocturnal. We implemented a protein program on the ranch
in the winter of 2002 for our deer herd. This should add mass and inches to all of our bucks.
We do not think you will be disappointed with the quality of our deer herd.
 |
What are the chances of harvesting a Whitetail deer? |
All of our rifle hunters have had an opportunity to take a shot at a decent buck. Some have
not for reasons of their own. For example, we had a gentleman within 50 yards of a 170 class
typical twelve point. The buck was chasing a doe around us for 20 minutes. The hunter
chose not to shoot. We also have a number of hunters that miss. We estimate that the
success rate for bow hunters is about 50% and 85 % for the rifle hunters.
 |
What about processing and taxidermy? |
In addition to the complimentary field dressing and cold storage of your trophies, the ranch
can also recommend excellent taxidermists in the San Angelo area. If you plan to depart
on a commercial airline with your game, check with your airline to determine the rules
for checking ice chests as luggage. Since 9/11 many of the rules have changed. If you
do not take your game limit with you we will distribute to local charities, friends, or other
groups who will benefit. We do not condone, nor do we allow, harvesting of animals without
the intention of eating or mounting the animals.
 |
What kind of accommodations do you have? |
We have built lodging quarters on the ranch that will accommodate 10 hunters
comfortably. For our Trophy hunts, we only plan to house 6 hunters at one time.
These numbers will allow us to keep the hunting pressure on the ranch low on a week to
week basis. The lodge is a guest house that was built for the comforts of your home.
Each room will sleep two individuals in twin beds. The rooms are modest, and open up
to an addition that has a view of a protein feeder 60 yards from the main lodge.

What would be appropriate hunting attire? |
Texas has a wide range of temperature variability during the winter months. Beginning in
November and into March be prepared for cold weather particularly during the evenings,
nights, and early mornings. Warm clothes and thermals are essentials. A medium insulated
or down jacket is appropiate. Include warm socks, gloves, and a scarf. Otherwise regular
camouflage hunting clothes, hiking boots with ankle support and a hat. We have been
known to have unseasonably warm days so lighter clothing is also reccommended.
Casual clothes for dinner. In Texas and on the HHH Ranch Hunter Orange is not required
during the hunt.
